There were 28,930 people in Walla Walla in 1996. For every one person in Walla Walla, there are 100 people in Seattle.

Several Indian tribes have lived in the region of Walla Walla. These are the Walla Walla, Nez Perce, Cayuse, Yakima and Umatilla Indians.

Walla Walla is also home to a state prison. It holds the worst prisoners in Washington. It is a maximum-security prison. It is a very old prison and has been there for many years. They have a "death row" and do executions here. The prisoner who is going to die has a choice of being hanged or having poison put in them.

Facility Description:  The Washington State Penitentiary houses long-term older, violent, and more serious offenders in four distinct housing areas that range from Security Levels II through V. They are, respectively: Minimum Security Unit (MSU); Medium Security Complex (MSC); Close Security Housing (main institution); and Maximum Security (Intensive Management Unit - IMU).
Work Experience:  Institution support positions are available in areas including food service, janitorial, and various maintenance functions. A large vegetable garden produces thousands of pounds of fresh produce used to supplement existing food supplies. Excess perishable foods are donated to local area food banks. Correctional Industries programs include license plate manufacture, sheet and welded metal production, wood and upholstery restoration, sign production and refurbishing, mattress production, a hog farm, and a dairy/heifer farm. EarthRay (a Class I industry) produces a variety of re-usable bags, i.e., sports, duffle, shopping, garment, etc.
